- Princess Elena’s Treasure and Rescue: The mountain’s modern name and its most famous rock formation (Pietrele Doamnei – ‘The Lady’s Rocks’) originate from the 16th century. During an invasion, Princess Elena (wife of Moldavia’s ruler Petru Rareș) fled into the Rarău Mountains with her family and the state treasury. According to legend, giant boulders fell as the enemy approached, burying both the treasure and the invaders, which saved the princess.
- Connection to the Dacians: In Romanian historiography and mythology, the mountainous areas of Bucovina are viewed as ancient strongholds of the Dacian people. Local legends speak of Dacian tunnels beneath the massif where gold and sacred objects were said to be hidden away during Roman invasions.
